The Dark Knight Gets Re-Release

The Batman installment will hit theaters (again) in January.

Warner Brothers plans to re-release Christopher Nolan's smash success, The Dark Knight, on January 23 nationwide, Variety reports. This move could make the film the fourth movie in history to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.

"We wanted to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen," Dan Fellman, president of Warner Brothers' domestic distribution, said in an announcement yesterday.

The Dark Knight currently claims a $530.3 million domestic gross and a $465.9 million international gross. These sums place it less than $4 million short of the $1 billion marker.

Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest are the only films which have grossed $1 billion.

The Dark Knight, the follow-up to 2005's Batman Begins, also made history with the second highest domestic gross of all time, behind Titanic.

The Dark Knight will be released on DVD next Tuesday.
