Dave Grohl, Nirvana's former drummer and the Foo Fighters' current frontman, recently revisited his past.
According to NME, in a new interview with the Observer, he revealed one rehearsal for a Foo Fighters show had him and two ex-Nirvana members, Krist Novoselic and touring member Pat Smear, visiting an old territory before a concert earlier this year.
“Krist is on bass, Pat's on guitar. I'm on drums," Grohl recalled. "Krist says, 'You wanna run through some oldies?' Me and Pat look at each other. I mean, that's something I've never considered before. I was like, 'OK.'”
The song, however, turned out to be one of Nirvana’s biggest hits, and Grohl admitted it was strange to play it again.
"Krist says, 'F--- it, let's do 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' And Pat starts playing and we kick into it. I haven't played that drumbeat in 17 years."
No one sang, he revealed. Just the melody filled the room, and the only other person to hear it was the Foo Fighters' studio manager.
"It was crazy. It was like… a ghost,” he admitted. “It was heavy."
