David Blaine Sets New World Record for Holding One's Breath

David Blaine attempted and achieved a new world record on Oprah Winfrey's show.

According to the Associated Press, David Blaine set a new breath-holding Guinness World Record Wednesday on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Blaine submerged himself in a water-filled sphere during the live broadcast and continued to hold his breath for 17 minutes and 4 seconds, beating the previous record-holder's time of 16 minutes and 32 seconds. Peter Colat set the previous record in Switzerland on Feb. 10.

Winfrey appeared extremely nervous during Blaine's stunt. She could not sit still in her chair and placed her head in her hands as Blaine's heart rate continued to rise. Doctor's were on site the entire time to ensure the 35-year-old magician was safe while attempting the challenging feat. Also present was a Guinness World Record judge to certify the achievement.

Blaine inhaled pure oxygen for 23 minutes before being submerged in the tank. Shortly after the stunt was complete, he was smiling and feeling great. He told Oprah that completing the stunt meant achieving a lifelong dream.
