David Duchovny in Rehab for Sex Addiction

The actor voluntarily checked himself into a facility for treatment for his addiction.

X-Files actor David Duchovny is addicted to sex, according to People.com.

In a statement released Thursday by his attorney, Duchovny said, "I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction."

His lawyer, Stanton "Larry" Stein, also said Duchovny asks for the media and public to respect his privacy and that of his family during this difficult time.

The actor's rep, Flo Grace, confirmed the rehab report.

The 48-year-old actor married actress Tea Leoni in 1997. The pair have two children together: daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6.

Duchovny currently stars in the Showtime series, Californication, in which he plays a womanizing writer in Los Angeles. He won a Golden Globe Award for best comic actor for his role.

"All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time," the network said in a statement.

The second season of the show will premiere September 28.

The X-Files was on air for 9 seasons and led to two movie spin-offs, one of which hit theaters this summer and featured Duchovny.

The actor has also starred in a number of movies, including Trust the Man and House of D.
