David Lee Roth Couldn't Fill Howard Stern's Old Chair
Can't beat the real thing.
After barely four months hosting a CBS radio gig previously held by "king of all media" Howard Stern, David Lee Roth is being taken off the air and is not expected to return.
One of three replacements for Stern, who departed CBS for Sirius Satellite Radio at the beginning of this year, the former Van Halen frontman apparently failed to draw the audience of his predecessor, even as a mere 20 percent of Stern's old listeners have signed up for Sirius at this point.
The replacement does allow CBS to strike another blow against Stern, whom it is currently suing for failure to comply with his previous contract, by creating a deal with Sirius rival XM to license the "Opie and Anthony Show" radio program in Roth's place.
Shock jocks Greg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia, whose most famous stunt (which got them fired) asked viewers to report their most egregious public sex and caused one couple to be arrested in a New York church, will now be on the air in Roth's markets of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Palm Beach.
Opie and Anthony agreed to some censorship during their three-hour block on CBS, which will run simultaneously and uncensored on XM. After the CBS block the pair will return to XM studios for two more uncensored hours.
There are no reports that Stern's other replacements, Adam Carolla on the West Coast and former Cleveland radio host Rover in between, will be replaced despite weak early results for their shows.
