David Letterman May Be Retiring in the Near Future

Letterman may put in two more years as the ‘Late Show’ host.

Late Show host David Letterman made a comment on his show last night regarding his plans for retirement. Letterman was interviewing foul-mouthed radio host Howard Stern and asked him when he plans to put his working days behind him. Howard turned the tables on Letterman and asked him the same question in return.

“I don’t know. Maybe two years, I think,” he responded.

Reps for Letterman downplayed the Late Show host’s comment but didn’t deny it either.

Rob Burnett, president of Dave’s production company, Worldwide Pants, stated, “Dave and Howard are very rare entities in show business in that most people are asked to leave the stage. These guys have complete control over their own exits.”

“Dave has mused on air about retiring lots of times. Whenever the day comes that he actually chooses to announce his departure, I don’t think that announcement will be ambiguous,” Burnett said while continuing to downplay Letterman’s comment.

If David Letterman plans on retiring in 2013, the host will be turning 66. Johnny Carson was the same age when he stepped down from his hosting duties on the Tonight Show.
