Dawn Is Breaking for Twilight Readers

Harry Potter's successor series comes to an end, sort of.

Young people across the country are eagerly anticipating the stroke of midnight, which will signify the breaking of dawn.

Bookstores and libraries are holding organized events tonight, although it might be hard to keep excited readers' eyes off of their watches, as Breaking Dawn, the fourth "Twilight" book, will be available beginning on August 2.

The "Twilight" book series began in October 2005 with the publication of the first installment (titled Twilight). The sequel, New Moon, arrived in 2006, and Eclipse, the third book, was released in August 2007. The stories are mostly told from the point of view of the character, Isabella Swan, who moves to a town called Forks, and has romantic feelings for both a werewolf (Jacob Black) and a vampire (Edward Cullen).

The anticipation for Breaking Dawn was cranked up by series author Stephenie Meyer, starting with the inclusion of the new book's first chapter in special editions of Eclipse. Meyer also shared an excerpt of Breaking Dawn in an Entertainment Weekly article two months ago. In the article, she also stated that she "can't wait to get the book out and be able to talk to everyone about it." Since July 12, the author has put a new quote (from the book) up each week on her official Web site.

Classified as "young adult" novels, the books' blend of romance, fantasy, and horror has appealed to millions of readers. Although this will be the last book in the traditional series, the Twilight fever is not likely to die down any time soon.

Ms. Meyer has announced that Midnight Sun will tell the Twilight story from the point of view of the vampire, Edward. No release date has been given to the book, but the first chapter can be read on the author's Web site. The titles of two additional companion books have also been revealed. Winter will see the release of The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, and in November 2008, shelves will be stocked with Twilight: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion. That's right. The film version of Twilight, starring Kristin Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward, will hit theaters in time for Christmas.
