The Day the Earth Stood Still Is Box Office King
The sci-fi remake, The Day the Earth Stood Still, was number one this weekend at the box office, pulling in $31 million, according to Sunday estimates.
The Keanu Reeves film, which many critics accused of being a shallow interpretation of the original, unseated the reigning box office champ, Four Christmases, in its opening weekend. Four Christmases grossed $13.3 million in its third week of release, making for a just under $88 million total. Twilight claimed the number three slot with a little over $8 million. It has earned $150 million over the past four weeks, reaching the milestone director Catherine Hardwicke said would be required for a sequel (which is already in the works).
The animated Miley Cyrus-John Travolta movie, Bolt, and the Hugh Jackman-Nicole Kidman epic, Australia, came in fourth and fifth with $7.5 and $4.3 million, respectively.
Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino, though it earned only $284,000, had the best per screen average: $47,333. It was released in only six theaters.
