Even with a summer filled with blockbuster movies, nothing could seem to help the movie industry overcome sluggish movie ticket sales. The projected domestic revenues for 2011 is about $10.15 billion. This is down 4% from the revenues earned back in 2010, mostly in part from the Avatar film revenue. The year 2011 was the second year in a row that attendance at the movies decreased rapidly. Overseas ticket sales helped the movie industry overall.
Yahoo News reported that ticket sales for the movie industry reached the lowest recorded sales in 16 years. However, a few major blockbuster films did help increase the overall sales for the movie industry this year, including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Harry Potter brought in over $1.3 billion dollars worldwide.
The New York Times reported studios are making more 3-D films, with 40 films in 3-D this year alone, and with the increase in ticket prices the economy may have been a strong factor in the decrease of ticket sales.
Many industry executives explain that the lack of ticket sales is due to major blockbuster films failing to perform well. Many franchises such as X-Men and Pirates of the Caribbean saw decreases in ticket sales.
The year 2011 was set to be a big year for the movie industry and resulted in disappointing ticket sales. The year 2012 is being projected as the year that will bring back audiences and ticket sales to the film industry. The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, the first Hobbit film by Peter Jackson, The Amazing Spider Man and the re-release of the mega hit Titanic in 3-D are all hitting the big screen in 2012, most likely resulting in major box office sales.
