DeGeneres, Many Others Saddened by Gay Marriage Ban
One of the biggest subplots in Tuesday's election was whether gay marriage would be banned in California.
The vote was close, but 52 percent voted for Proposition 8, overturning the state of California's Supreme Court ruling in May, which legalized same-sex marriages in California.
Many homosexual people in the state, and around the world, have spoken out against the vote.
One of the biggest names has been popular talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who married longtime partner Portia de Rossi in California back in August.
She said that she feels "saddened beyond belief" by the vote. In a statement released on Wednesday, DeGeneres said that she, "like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step toward equality" after the election of Barack Obama.
But then, with the passing of Proposition 8 in California, she feels the state, and the country to some extent, "took a giant step away."
