Demi Moore, Twitter Prevent Teen Suicide
Twitter may be the ultimate medium for Internet-happy celebrities to keep fans alerted as to their whereabouts every two minutes, but the other night Twitter also allowed Demi Moore to save the life of a suicidal teen.
The 18-year-old youth, who lived in Florida, posted on Moore's Twitter page. The tweet said that he had messed up his life and that he was thinking about killing himself.
The post read that the would-be suicide was about to "go hang myself from a tree outside my house and end my life. I have no reason to live anymore. I am going to send a live feed of me hanging myself. No one cares if I die or not."
Moore asked the poster if he needed help, to which he replied yes. At the same time, Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) saw the post and called a suicide prevention facility which contacted police in the Florida county. An officer dispatched to the poster's home found him crying at this computer.
The suicidal youth reportedly suffers from OCD and has been placed in protective custody. After the event, Moore later tweeted: "Thank you Twitterverse for your help supporting someone in pain last night."
