Democratic Senator, Nelson, Rejects Health Care Compromise on Abortion
Democratic Senators who had hoped to see the political party’s health care reform bills passed before Christmas have endured a setback earlier today. Democratic Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska has announced that the Democratic Party has yet to secure his vote due to the fact that proposed compromises in relation to abortion provisions that are contained in the health care legislation were not enough to sway him in their favor.
The Democratic Party is trying to cater to Sen. Nelson’s demands to a certain extent because of the fact that they are in the process of scrambling for a 60th vote in favor of their health care reform bill. Republican Senators are planning on voting unanimously against the Democrats’ health care legislation and as a result of their unanimous opposition to the bill, Senate Democrats must generate 60 votes in favor of the legislation for it to overcome Republican opposition.
According to Reuters, Sen. Nelson finds himself in a position of power due to the fact that he represents the potential 60th vote for the health care legislation. Sen. Nelson, who openly opposes abortion rights, gave a statement on Thursday to clarify his opposition towards the presently proposed compromises. He said, “As it is right now, without further modifications, it isn't sufficient. I accept the idea of deadlines because sometimes that helps you get something done. But a deadline and a timeline that is out there that is not achievable isn't helpful."
