Democrats Question McCain's Financing

Democratic Party officials are requesting an investigation on what John McCain's motives were for withdrawing from public funding.

According to the Associated Press, Democratic Party officials are requesting an investigation on whether Senator John McCain violated election laws by withdrawing from public financing.

McCain was entitled to $5.8 million in federal funding for his primary campaign, but decided to give up the money to avoid spending restrictions.

A lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission is set to be filed Monday in U.S. District Court, according to AP.

"There is a compelling public interest in determining whether Senator McCain agreed to participate in the matching funds program so he could get a loan for his campaign, then violated the terms of that agreement so he could ignore the spending cap and raise unlimited money from lobbyists and special interests," said Democratic executive director, Tom McMahon.

The Democratic National Committee is seeking civil fines or restrictions preventing McCain from going over spending limits, according to AP.The Republican National Committee said the lawsuit is "total nonsense."
