Dennis Quaid, like most human beings, has had his share of mistakes. But what the actor calls his “greatest mistake” was being addicted to cocaine.
In an article he wrote for Newsweek, Quaid opened up about the addiction and the pressures he faced as a fresh-face in Hollywood during the 1970s.
“Coming from where I came from—lower-middle-class life, from Houston into Hollywood—and all of a sudden this success starts happening to you, I just didn’t know how to handle that,” Quaid said. “Doing blow just contributed to me not being able to handle the fame, which, at the time, I guess I felt I didn’t deserve.”
Quaid even went on to add that, at the height of his addiction, he would request cocaine to be in the budget of his movies. According to Fox News, Quaid stated that the drug in the budget was “thinly disguised,” and said that it was like petty cash and that “people would make deals. Instead of having a cocktail, you’d have a line.”
Quaid overcame his addiction in the '90s, but says he keeps it in the back of his head to “teach him humility.”
Although Dennis is doing fine, it seems that his brother, Randy, is having problems of his own. The N.Y. Daily News reports that Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi, are seeking refuge in Canada after failing to appear in court for a vandalism incident.
When asked of his brother’s incident, Dennis told People, “[I] love my brother and I miss my brother. That’s all I’m going to say.”
