Did Drugs Cause Break-Up Between Ledger and Williams?

In the wake of actor Heath Ledger's untimely death, questions are circulating about his life. One mystery is why Ledger and actress Michelle Williams broke up after being engaged and having a child together. Access Hollywood reports that Ledger's partying and drug use could have been a factor in the couple's split. People magazine's senior editor, JD Heyman, told Access Hollywood that Ledger "liked to go out" and "was a known user of drugs," such as cocaine. Although Williams saw Ledger's partying as being incompatible "with raising a child ... " and ended her three-year relationship with him in September 2007, "she did love Heath-she loved him very much," said Heyman.

Friends described Ledger and Williams as "kindred spirits," and both were committed to their acting. The two worked together on Brokeback Mountain, but paid no attention to the fame or hype that surrounded the film. Instead, they concentrated on their life together in Brooklyn with their baby daughter, Matilda.

Heyman said that Ledger loved his life "... in Brooklyn, he loved being with Matilda," and "people were blown away by his devotion" to his daughter whenever he was with her.
