Did Wynona Rider "Lose" Those Jewels?
Wynona Rider once got busted for shoplifting, a fact that few will let her forget. On November 20, she was loaned some diamonds and clothes for an event in Madrid. The story gets sketchy when Rider checked out of her hotel room. Voici claims Rider says she left the jewels at the front desk, while the security footage tells a different story. According to celeb site TMZ.com, Rider left the goods in her hotel room when no one showed up to pick up the valuables. The only thing missing were the diamond ring and bracelet.
Since Rider is famous for her shoplifting from Saks Fifth Avenue in 2001, she's the perfect target for this kind of attack. And anyone who doesn't think to give items that valuable to a human being may be setting themselves up for failure.
I'm not usually one for cynicism, but I wonder what kind of thought process would have someone leave valuable jewelry in a hotel room. Whether Rider is guilty or not (and most likely she's only guilty of being incompetent in this instance), it seems incredible that she would make the command decision to leave the jewels in her room - unattended - after she checked out.
In the end, $125,000 of jewels are missing, and whether Rider has them or not, she is clearly responsible for not seeing they were taken care of. Sure, the folks at Marie Claire were supposed to come pick the goods up. It just seems a matter of common sense to make sure that diamonds are taken care of. The fact that nothing else was taken from the room is also interesting, but with that much ice, you can buy almost any dress you want.
Whether you love her or you hate her (and I loved her in Edward Scissorhands and A Scanner Darkly), this goes to show that Wynona is not someone to loan your valuable stuff to, unless you're ready to pick it up. An amazing actress, yes. A queen of common sense? Apparently not.
