Jesse Farrelly, the 20-year-old son of There’s Something About Mary co-director Bobby Farrelly died this week of an apparent overdose.

TMZ first reported that law enforcement rushed to a apartment in Costa Mesa, CA to respond to a call for an “unresponsive young male ... possible overdose.” Jesse was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy has already been completed by a coroner, who ruled out foul play.

According to E! News, Bobby, his wife Nancy and daughters Tiffany and Anna, released a joint statement confirming that Jesse was struggling with substance abuse, although they did not go into any further details.

“It is with profound sorrow that we accept the passing of our beloved Jesse following his struggle with addiction...We fully trust that he is now in the hands of our Lord,” the statement read. They added that they “...are immeasurably grateful for the abundance of happiness and laughter he brought into our lives, and we will rejoice eternally for all the moments we got to breathe in his wondrous spirit.”

They also thanked the public for “well wishes” and asked that they respect their privacy.

A source for E! News said that Jesse had been working with his father at the Farrelly Brothers’ production offices on their upcoming film, The Three Stooges. TMZ adds that he had appeared in There’s Something about Mary and Hall Pass.

The Farrelly Brothers are best known for their hit comedies, including Dumb & Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Me, Myself & Irene and last year’s Hall Pass. Their Stooges film hits theaters in April.
