Disney Channel Artists Get no Radio Play

The acts that come out of the Disney channel top the charts, but don't get top 40 radio play.

Nobody has learned how to corner the tween market quite like Disney. They cross promote their stars with TV shows, Disney channel movies, CD's, clothing lines, and the list goes on. This method seems to work wonders for the stars of the Disney channel. Star of "Hannah Montana," Miley Cyrus, hit the billboard charts with a bang and then got a clothing line.

However, with all the success that the Disney musicians attain, there is still something that they are missing: radio play. For some reason top 40 radio refuses to play these hits even though they by top 40 artists. "Radio has a stigma about playing these acts, considering them teen and preteen in their appeal," says Guy Zapoleon, a radio consultant and former Top 40 programmer. Even the "High School Musical" soundtrack, the best selling album in 2006, is left off the radio play lists. Radio's target audience is 18-34, so if they played those "teen acts," they would be giving airtime to music their listeners wouldn't be interested in.
