Disney still distributing Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto"
The Walt Disney Co. will go through with plans to distribute Mel Gibson's upcoming thriller "Apocalypto," the studio announced Friday.
Many speculated Disney would sell the film's distribution rights to another studio in order to sever ties with Gibson after his much-publicized drunk driving arrest. Gibson was arrested last month for driving under the influence, during which he made several anti-Semitic remarks, such as saying Jews "were responsible for all the wars in the world."
"It's not true," said Disney spokeswoman Heidi Trotta of the distribution rumors.
"Apocalypto" takes place in an ancient Mayan village, with the characters speaking entirely in the Yucatec dialect accompanied by subtitles. Gibson said the film, which features a cast of unknown actors, would be narrated through the Mayan perspective, focusing on "civilizations and what undermines them."
"Apocalypto" is due in theaters Dec. 8.
