DJ AM, the stage name of Adam Goldstein, whose music has appeared on albums by Madonna and Will Smith, was found dead in his New York apartment on Friday, Reuters reports. He was 36.

Spokesman for the New York police, John Sweeney, said officers found a man dead at 5:23 p.m. on Friday but could not immediately confirm that the man was Goldstein, but the address where Sweeney said the man was found matches the address of Goldstein's apartment.

According to TMZ.com, Goldstein was found with prescription pill bottles near his body after he hadn't been heard from in days. Friends who had previously gone to check on him received no response. When police broke down the door, they found Goldstein's body.

In addition to albums by Madonna and Will Smith, as a DJ, Goldstein's work appeared on albums by Babyface and Papa Roach.

With the band, Crazy Town, Goldstein had the hit song, "Butterfly," in 2001, but the group broke up two years later.

Last year, he partnered with Travis Barker of Blink 182 to create a live DJ and drum performance. The two played occasionally at clubs and other concerts and other concert venues.

In September of 2008, the duo was involved in a private plane crash that killed the two pilots and two other passengers. Goldstein and Barker were hospitalized in critical condition and suffered serious burns.

Goldstein made his last known public remarks via Twitter on Tuesday when he posted lyrics from a Grandmaster Flash song: "New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems."
