Donaire shines in super flyweight debut

Nonito Donaire won his first fight in the super flyweight division against Rafael Concepcion in a unanimous decision.

Nonito Donaire cruised to a victory via unanimous decision over challenger Rafael Concepcion on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in his first fight at super flyweight, according to ESPN.com. Donaire (22-1, 14 KOs) vacated his IBF flyweight title to move up in weight for the fight, and the victory landed him the WBA interim title. The scores were 117-111, 115-113, and 116-112.

Concepcion (13-4-1, 8 KOs) came in four pounds over the 115-pound weight limit for the bout, which cost him 20 percent of his $65,000 fight purse. Despite his larger opponent, however, Donaire prevailed. He opened up a cut beneath Concepcion's left eye in the second round with a stiff jab, but his performance waned somewhat in the middle rounds. Donaire rallied in the final two rounds, once again utilizing his jab efficiently to take home the win.

Donaire has expressed interest in securing fights with Fernando Montiel and Jorge Arce, two stars from the super flyweight division, before continuing his move up in weight.
