Dr. Drew Offends Tom Cruise

Dr. Drew questions Scientology, using Cruise as example.

Dr. Drew Pinsky of Celebrity Rehab is in the middle of a heated argument with actor and highly publicized Scientologist since 1990, Tom Cruise. The standoff comes after a comment made by Pinsky in an interview with Playboy magazine, people.com reports.

In the interview, Pinsky questions the meaning behind Scientology and suggests that perhaps being "neglected" during his childhood is the true reason Cruise found The Church of Scientology.

"Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology?" Dr. Drew said in an interview with Playboy. "To me, that's a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood - maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect."

The doctor proceeded to theorize that many celebrities with outrageous behaviors are both mentally unstable as well as followers of Scientology.

"A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt," Dr. Drew explained.

Cruise's lawyer, Bert Fields, responded to People magazine with the statement: "I don't know what kind of a doctor this guy is, but this posturing flake pretends to diagnose people he's never met and suggests all Scientologists are mentally ill."

Both Pinsky and his rep have issued apologies stating they meant no harm.
