Drew Barrymore Makes Directing Debut

Drew Barrymore makes directorial debut with the film "Whip It."

Drew Barrymore has gone from in front of the camera to behind it. Her new film, titled "Whip It," is set in the world of roller-derby racing. The talented Barrymore had not only decided to direct her film, but also play the role of derby girl Smashley Simpson.

The movie is based on Derby Girl by Shauna Cross. "Whip It" is a true story about the journey a Texas teen has through the derby world. Barrymore was attracted to the tough story line and according to People, she said, "I like movies about girls who are capable."

The cast includes Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, "Juno" star Ellen Page, and female rap artist Eve. Director Barrymore, also casted real-life derby girls from Michigan.

Barrymore, 34, premiered the film at the Toronto International Film Festival. "Whip It" opens in theatres on October 2nd.
