Driver Who Hit Director Could Face Charges of Vehicular Manslaughter
New developments surfaced today about the person who drove the SUV that killed director Bob Clark and his son. It was found that Hector Manuel Velazquez-Nava, a native of Mexico, had a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit, Los Angeles police said.
Federal authorities also said that Velazquez-Nava was in the United States illegally, driving without a license, driving under the influence of alcohol, and could face charges of vehicular manslaughter, the Los Angeles Times said Friday.
Clark, director of Porky's and A Christmas Story, was driving home with his son, Ariel, when their southbound car was struck by the northbound SUV driven by Velazquez-Nava. While the investigation is still ongoing, as of now, it appears the SUV entered the southbound lane, causing Clark to swerve and to try to avoid the head-on collision, said Los Angeles Police Detective Mike Fischer.
Velazquez-Nava was reported as having a blood alcohol level of 0.24 percent, which is actually three times the 0.08 percent legal limit for driving in California.
Velazquez-Nava is currently being held at the Van Nuys Jail. His bail has been set at $100,000, but due to Velazquez-Nava's undocumented status, it makes him ineligible for release on bond, officials said.
