DVD Sniffing Dogs to Fight War Against Piracy
The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) has unleashed their newest soldiers on the war against piracy; DVD sniffing dogs. The first two dogs that were trained, black labs Lucky and Flo, have uncovered at least 1.9 million discs, which lead to the arrest of at least 26 offenders.
Since those two dogs, three more labs have been added to sniff out pirates. Ruca, who resides in Portugal and Dixie, who helps authorities in Scotland. Manny, a yellow lab who was planned to work in Malaysia, was found dead before he had a chance to begin searching for counterfeited discs.
Foul play was suspected, and although the autopsy was not made public, the MPAA put out a $28,000 reward for any information on the person who killed Manny and asked that movie theaters fly their flags half-mast.
The dogs are trained to smell the polycarbonate and other chemicals on the discs, and although they cannot differentiate between pirated discs and legitimate discs, their talents will certainly help the MPAA find pirates who are illegally selling copied versions of films.
