Economy Slows Release of Bioshock Movie

Budget too pricey for Universal to approve.

The successful video game, Bioshock, had been in the works to become a movie under Universal Pictures, reports the Blip Network. However, as soon as the budget surpassed $160 million, Universal decided to put the award-winning video game concept on the shelf.

The picture company laid off several employees and asked those in charge of budgeting the film to try and reduce costs. One possibility is to shoot outside the United States to enjoy tax credits.

The film is said to have such a high budget due to the entire film needing to be shot in what will appear to be an underwater city, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The New York Times reports, the movie is to be directed by Gore Verbinski, who is most notably famous for Pirates of the Caribbean, and the screenplay is to be written by John Logan, who worked on Gladiator.
