Now that Benicio Del Toro, J.J. Abrams’ top choice for the villain in his next Star Trek film, has dropped out after negotiations broke down, the search for a replacement begins. It is now being reported that Abrams is now eyeing Edgar Ramirez, who recently starred in Carlos, for the role.
Variety first reported that Ramirez, as well as Colombiana actor Jordi Molla are being considered for the role. Paramount did not comment on the report. Ramirez reportedly did his audition through Skype.
According to Ace Show Biz, Abrams and Paramount have to cast the role as soon as possible because the six-month production schedule is going to have to start next month if they hope to get the film out on its May 17, 2013 scheduled release date.
As for who Ramirez or Molla would play, it is still unknown. Khan, the villain of 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, has been rumored, but Abrams has denied it. Khan was played by Ricardo Montalban in that film. He also played the character in an episode of the original television series called “Space Seed.”
Most of the cast of Abrams’ 2009 film, including Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, are returning in the sequel. Alice Eve and Robocop’s Peter Weller will also join the cast.
Ramirez’s next project is Wrath of the Titans, the sequel to Clash of the Titans, reports Collider.
