To ring in the Jewish New Year - Rosh Hashanah - the Huffington Post compiled and reflected upon the Jewish literary canon.
Included in their list are "some of the most critically acclaimed authors of this century." HP gathered a list of the eight greatest fictional Jewish characters in books.
Who received the first spot? Alexander Portnoy of Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint. This particular novel is known for catapaulting the author to literary stardom. Roth's protagonist of the novel is "at once universal in character and utterly distinctive" as he "tells his tale in a nonstop monologue on his psychoanalyst's couch."
Also included on the top three of the list of characters was Asher Lev of Chaim Potok's My name Is Asher Lev and The Gift of Asher Lev, as well as Joe Kavalier and Sam Slay in Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.
