Ellen DeGeneres often uses her talk show as a way to help people in need, and always asks for her fans to send in their stories so she can help them in any way she can, whether it's a little bit of cash to a struggling family or getting the word out about an important issue.
This past season, DeGeneres received a video from the principal of Whitney Elementary School, a school in Las Vegas at which almost 85 percent of the children are homeless. The principal, Sherrie Gahn, is loved by her students and pays for many of the school expenses (not to mention many daily expenses of her students' families) out of her own pocke. Gahn inspired DeGeneres to help the students of Whitney Elementary, she rallied other businesses to donate supplies and even got Justin Bieber to perform a concert at the school.
All the attention and support DeGeneres has given the school has shed light on the many schools throughout the country, that are struggling financially. DeGeneres is doing everything in her power to help. She announced on Twitter that Facebook users can help contribute to Whitney Elementary in a very easy way. In the free Facebook game WeTopia, players can grow crops and help fund a food bank for the kids that truly need it.
The idea gives regular people a chance to help contribute to a great cause without having to give money or sacrifice anything. Fans on Ellen's website, are totally on board, and agree that it's a great and easy way to get involved and help fund a good cause.
"Loving weTopia!!!!!!" one fan commented. "I'm playing Facebook games a good half of my day, and now can tell my hubby that I have a great reason for spending most of my time on Facebook! I'm playing for those who truly have need! Thank you for this!!!!"
