Eminem Blows Off Bono
Sir Bob Geldof of Boomtown Rats fame and Bono, politically charged lead singer of U2, were responsible for organizing last summer's Live 8 Concert, and bringing name acts on board to be a part of the largest one-day musical event in the history of music.
Like its predecessor, Live Aid, twenty years ago, the goal of Live 8 was to bring awareness to the masses of the extreme poverty that besets many third world developing countries. The issue was to be discussed at the G8 Summit Conference. In hopes that world leaders would forgive the massive debts these countries owe, Geldof said, "This is without doubt a moment in history where ordinary people can grasp the chance to achieve something truly monumental and demand from the 8 world leaders at G8 an end to poverty."
Live 8 organizers realized that, on the 20th anniversary of Live Aid, which headlined popular musical acts of the 80's, this would be a new concert for a new generation of music fans. So they brought in today's chart topping acts including Kanye West, Green Day, Destiny's Child, and Coldplay. Bono and Geldof also wanted Eminem to perform, knowing the rapper would attract and influence a large following. They even went as far as sending Eminem pictures of Africans wearing t-shirts with his name emblazoned on them. However, to Bono's great dismay, the notorious rapper and star of 8 Mile did not even bother to return their calls.
Geldof said, "Bono called me while I was in Africa and said 'he's not calling me back. I've got these pictures of kids wearing Eminem and D-12 t-shirts and we got them sent off to Eminem's office but did we hear anything? It's sad.'"
