Country singer Hank Williams, Jr. has been an integral part of Monday Night Football, but after getting criticized for using Hitler in a discussion about President Obama, ESPN’s first reaction to the comment was just pulling his intro for this week’s game. Now, the network has announced that Williams has been completely let go.
Williams got himself into hot water on Monday, by comparing President Obama’s golf game with House Speaker Republican John Boehner to Hitler golfing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Williams than claimed that he was misunderstood and apologized on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
Today, ESPN announced on their website that they have decided to permanently cut their relationship with Williams. "We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams, Jr," the statement read.
However, NBC Sports reports that Williams claims that he is the one who made the decision to quit, not the network. Williams wrote on his site that, “By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment, Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It’s been a great run.”
Williams has been doing the “Are You Ready For Some Football?” theme song for the past 25 years, starting when Monday Night Football was still broadcast on ABC.
