Etta James was buried on Saturday and stars and fans alike were present in her honor.
E! News reports that her funeral was held at Greater Bethany Community Church in Gardena, California, a week and a day after she died on Jan 20 from complications of leukemia.
According to VVN Music, Christina Aguilera and Stevie Wonder were two of those stars, with Aguilera performing James’ most famous song “At Last” (seen below) and Wonder performing “The Lord’s Prayer.”
"Out of all the singers that I've ever heard, she was the one that cut right to my soul and spoke to me," Aguilera told the audience before performing.
Reverend Al Sharpton administered the eulogy and the funeral itself. He started by reading a message from President Barack Obama, who famously danced to “At Last” with the First Lady at the inaugural ball dance.
Part of that message read: "Etta will be remembered for her legendary voice and her contributions to our nation's musical heritage. I know she will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved her."
James was praised by Rev. Sharpton for helping to break down racial barriers in her music.
"The genius of Etta James is she flipped the script," Sharpton said. "She was able to get us on the same rhythms and humming the same ballads and understanding each others melodies way before we could even use the same hotels.”
James is survived by her husband of 42 years, Artis Mills, and her two sons Donto and Sametto.
