Facebook Adds New Language
America's largest social network is now going Arabic. Facebook, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif., is predicted to tap into a huge global market, according to HuffingtonPost.com.
Though the site already has users in Arabic-speaking parts of the world, Egypt alone boasts 900,000 users, the site will become all the more popular with the users being able to use it in Arabic.
Facebook will have some competition, as sites like Jeeran, Maktob, and ArabFriendz are popular Arabic sites for the region.
Arabic is spoken by over 250 million people throughout the world, and will be available on the site via the drop-down menu on the homepage. The language is traditionally written from right to left, with gender distinctions for verbs.
"It's the first time Arabic speakers will be able to use Facebook in their own language," said Ghassan Haddad, the Facebook director of that location.
Facebook is available in over 40 languages, and currently has 60 others in development.
