Free Comic Book Day brings out fans across the nation to their favorite stores to rake in as many comics as they can grab.

Comic book fans across America came out in full force on Saturday to celebrate what may be their favorite holiday of the year, Free Comic Book Day. Loads of shops in New York and other big cities participated as they handed out stacks of new and old comics.

The idea behind the holiday is to try and bring in new audiences to the comic book scene. Getting someone to start reading comic books they got for free could lead them into returning as a customer with interest in buying new comics.

Fosters.com reports that in Rochester, 23 different businesses opened their doors to the public in celebration of the holiday. Loads of people made their way downtown just to see what was available as collecting comics is a huge hobby for some.

In Manhattan shops brought in legendary comic book artists like Joe Staton as crowds flocked to try and get a glimpse of their favorite artist, says DNAinfo.

It was an extraordinary day for comic book fans worldwide and many were able to fulfill their dreams of meeting their idols.
