Fashion Week Has New Location

The iconic Fashion Week will be leaving the location it's been held at for 15 years.

Starting next year, the twice-yearly New York Fashion Week will be changing its location. Since 1993, the show has been held in Bryant Park. In 2010, it will relocate to a plaza in Lincoln Center.

The Associated Press reports that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg believed Fashion Week has been outgrowing Bryant Park for a while. The event originally had 35 shows and now has about 70.

Bloomberg said that his administration worked hard to find a new location because of the pressure for the events to switch coasts to Los Angeles. "That would be a real hit to our economy." Indeed, last year's two events generated $466 million in visitor spending.

The new space will give the designers 25 percent more space for their shows. The new location has about 87,000 square feet, whereas the Bryant Park space has 70,000.

The New York Times reports that about 63 designers will present their new collections starting February 13.
