Fellow Musicians Discuss Nicki Minaj

They all have good things to say.

Nicki Minaj has accomplished a lot in the last year: guest spots on what seems like an infinite amount of songs, awards, and being the first female rapper to have a number one song on the Billboard charts. Remarkably, this has all been done without even releasing an album. The Associated Press has interviewed some of Minaj’s peers to see what they had to say about what she is doing for female rappers.

Queen Latifah, who started off as an emcee, said, “Part of the reason hip-hop was dead is because there weren’t any female emcees out, really like in the forefront of hip-hop, playing on the radio, in the daytime, every day.”

Producer Pharrell said about Nicki: “I think since Nicki came out there’s going to be a lot of new girls coming out. There’s always one that paves the way and opens the door [and] I think she reopened the door to hip-hop for females.”

You can read all of the interviews, which include quotes from 50 Cent, Ludacris, and Eve, here.

Her debut album, Pink Friday, is due on November 23.
