Finding the Beatles After the Beatles
One would think that after two members of a four person band die, the band would dissolve into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and retire into the sunset. That is not the case for the Beatles though, as interesting ventures with their large discography of music are being tapped. With a good reception from 2007's Across the Universe and a collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, the Beatles' music has survived and inspired another generation of music lovers.
There are two new projects being worked on: All Together Now, a documentary about the making of the LOVE album (the collaboration with Cirque) was just released, and there are talks of making a video game based off of the Beatles. The developer behind Rock Band, Harmonix, has entered into a partnership with the Beatles' Apple Corps, Ltd. Although there haven't been any hints of what the game play will be like, many hope for a similar layout to Rock Band, with the guitarist, bassist, drummer, and singer.
It's nice to see the surviving members, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, the wives of John Lennon and George Harrison respectively, being able to work together. Apple Corps, Ltd. has become a very difficult company to tap. They have had struggles with the computer company, Apple, over name disputes and they still haven't released the Beatles discography on iTunes.
There are some questionable video games of the '80s and '90s based on musicians, including ones based on Journey and Aerosmith. I'm happy to see recent games like Rock Band and Karaoke Revolution come out with accurate versions. Even a frivolous game like Britney's Dance Beat combined the idea of dance steps and her music to a good degree of success. With the sharp eye and stamp of approval of the Beatles, Harmonix can only produce a quality game.
It's almost unheard of to see a band survive more than 40 years in the music industry and the Beatles have arguably shown the highest of influence on other musicians today. Musicians of tomorrow can soon find video games. For a colorful look at the Beatles' music, LOVE is still being performed in Las Vegas.
