The Science Channel has acquired the rights to the sci-fi cult classic series, Firefly, and will play it in its entirety, and in its originally intended order, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The two hour pilot episode will run on March 6 at 8pm, followed by the first episode at 10pm EST. The series will continue every Sunday, with segments starring physicist Dr. Michio Kaku discussing the theoretical science behind concepts in the show.
The series’ return to cable led Firefly and current Castle star Nathan Fillion to comment that he would be happy to reprise his role as Captain Mal and that if he won the lottery he would “buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet.”
Fans have responded to the comments by launching a webpage and Facebook campaign taking pledges to help the actor purchase the production rights to the show, according to Entertainment Weekly.
It is unlikely that even if enough money was raised, 20th Century Fox would sell the rights. But a strong showing of fan support could be enough to buy the reboot they have been awaiting.
