The first theatrical trailer for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers was released today.

The film brings together several of Marvel’s biggest super heroes, including Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, to face Loki. Deadline reports that all of the actors who played those characters in their individual films will reprise their roles. Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow have all returned.

The Kids Are All Right actor Mark Ruffalo was cast to take over the role of the Hulk from Eric Bana (who played the character in the 2003 film) and Edward Norton (who played the role in the 2008 film). Tom Hiddleston plays Loki, who first appeared in the Thor film. Joining the roster of characters is Hawkeye, played by The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner.

The Huffington Post reports that the film is still wrapping up production, which took place in New Mexico, Cleveland and New York City. The film was written and directed by Whedon, best known as the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Disney is scheduled to release the film on May 4, 2012. You can catch the trailer right here:
