First ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2’ trailer to run before ‘The Hunger Games’

Making what seems like the obvious move, Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment, which is now owned by Lionsgate, announced Friday that the studios will run the first official trailer for the final Twilight film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, ahead of The Hunger Games. This is the first significant move made since Lionsgate acquired Summit, the producers behind the Twilight franchise.

The Los Angeles Times first reported the move, which is fairly obvious since the two films are targeted towards the same young adult audience. Lionsgate is clearly hoping that once Twilight is over, they will not lose that audience and young adults will become fans of the adaptations of Suzanne Collins’ hit novels.

Lionsgate's chief executive Jon Feltheimer told the media that the Breaking Dawn - Part 2 trailers will “...debut exclusively on every Hunger Games print on its opening night for what will be Lions Gate's largest release ever," according to the LA Times. The Hunger Games, which cost Lionsgate $100 million to make, opens on March 23. Earlier this month, Lionsgate announced that it will get a one-week IMAX run as well.

As MTV News notes, Lionsgate already plans to make three sequels, making The Hunger Games franchise Lionsgate’s biggest investment.

Clearly, the key here for Lionsgate is the hope that Twilight fans might rush to the theater for the sole purpose of seeing the trailer and hopefully, they stick around for The Hunger Games.

The Twilight films grossed $2.5 billion worldwide, so it is understandable that Lionsgate might hope that they could make a sixth film. However, Feltheimer told the media that it would only happen if Stephenie Meyer writes a fifth book first. “If she (Meyer) wishes to do it, we’ll be there to support her,” Feltheimer said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Breaking Dawn - Part 2 is scheduled for release on Nov. 16.
