'FlashForward' and 'Caprica' in Danger of Cancellation?

Ratings continue to decline for the shows.

Another day, another set of rumors of TV series cancellations. This time, two sci-fi shows are being placed in the spotlight. ABC's FlashForward and Syfy's Caprica are apparently showing signs that may not be around for very much longer. Blog of all things sci-fi and sci-fi-related, io9, has the numbers for each of the first season series, and, unfortunately for fans, they're not looking too bright.

FlashForward recently lost one of its writers, David S. Goyer, who also worked on the scripts for both Christopher Nolan-helmed Batman films, and ABC recently made the decision to shorten the season to 22 episodes. Io9 points out that ABC has been rather fickle with the series, initially ordering 24, then upping it to 25, then back to 24 before dropping down to 23. And now it's just 22. Also notable is that the show just returned from an imposed hiatus that was intended to allow the writers to improve the show's scripts.

As for Caprica, the show appears to be hemorrhaging viewers. The pilot, which had already been released on DVD last year in an attempt to raise awareness of the show, managed to bring in 1.6 million viewers, while the second pulled 1.4 million. Unfortunately, the most recent third episode dropped dramatically to just 1.13 million. Despite the show's being a prequel to the wildly popular and lauded reimagining of Battlestar Galactica, it doesn't appear that the show is pulling its own weight. The only bright spot seems to be that Syfy reportedly has high hopes for the show, but it doesn't bode well when the established franchise is beaten by Discovery's Swamp Loggers.

Io9 notes that both shows will likely finish up their current seasons, but it's not looking too certain whether they will return for a second.
