Former Escort Breaks Silence
Former escort Ashley Dupre breaks her silence on ABC "20/20." She says she has made many mistakes, and that other young women could have ended up in her situation. Dupre has remained quiet since she was named in the prostitution scandal that forced NY Governor Eliot Spitzer to resign.
The 23 year old, tells Diane Sawyer "You don't mean to make those choices, but you're put in a situation and, you know, you have an opportunity to do it." Growing up in New Jersey her parents divorced at age 12, and as a teenager, she says she felt lost and confused about her relationship with men and missed that fatherly unconditional love.
After the divorce, Dupre went to live with her father and dropped out of high school due to difficultly. She wanted to prove that she could make it on her own and at 19 moved to New York. She began working as a cocktail server at a strip club and started abusing drugs and alcohol. A customer gave her a business card for the escort service and few nights later, she called. "I knew the line of business," she said. "I already had it in my mind what it was, and I made that decision. ... I knew exactly what I was walking into. ... I was so naive then. I think I was 19, and I was so careless."
Not looking to capitalize on her 15 minutes of fame she has reportly turned down book deals, a reality show, and $1 million offer from Hustler magazine and remains optimistic about a positive future.
