Four Big Names Advance at U.S. Open
Roger Federer has been hearing about his dominance in Men's Tennis slipping since his epic face off against Rafael Nadal at Wimbeldon, but it doesn't seem to be affecting him at the U.S. Open.
Federer won easily in the third round Sunday, defeating Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to move into the round of 16. This is significant, because Federer has yet to drop a set at the U.S. Open in New York, which should keep him fresh for a potential showdown with Nadal in the final.
Andy Roddick also advanced to the round of 16 by defeating No. 31 ranked Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (4). Roddick seems to have a good chance at winning at the Open, considering that he was the last one to win the tournament before Roger Federer won the next four (which is a streak still in tact).
The fourth big name (Novak Djokivic being the other) to advance at the Open was No. 2 Jelena Jankovic, who reached the quarters by defeating No. 21 Caroline Wozniacki 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
And with the loss of Ana Ivonivic (who didn't compete at the Olympics because of a bad thumb), Jankovic is one of five women to have a chance at the number one ranking.
But this goal seems to be a long way off for the number two player in the world, considering that she has never won a Grand Slam (the other three being the French Open, Wimbeldon and the Australian Open).
