Frank Mir Shocks the World
Tonight, Frank Mir won the UFC Interim Heavyweight Title at the UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008 PPV by defeating Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira.
Frank Mir went into the fight as the underdog, but still came out on top after TKO'ing Nogueira at 1:54 minutes into the second round. Before tonight's bout, the veteran and defending champ, Nogueira, had never been knocked out in his long, historic career. Nogueira was ranked as one of the best heavyweights in professional mixed martial arts.
Mir is now set to fight UFC Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar, in 2009, to unify their heavyweight title belts and crown the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion of the world.
Mir previously beat current champ Lesnar at the UFC 81 PPV earlier this year. Lesnar now looks to avenge his UFC debut loss against Mir who Lesnar hoped would win Mir's fight against Nogueira.
Mir's pro-MMA record now stands at 12 wins, 4 losses. Mir previously won the UFC Heavyweight Championship in 2004 by breaking Tim Sylvia's arm.
Mir had to vacate his title after suffering a severe car accident that split his leg in two. The injury put Mir's career in jeopardy before he made a successful return to the sport.
Mir made an emotional showing in his interview after the fight, saying he wouldn't have even bet on himself for the fight with Nogueira. Mir promised he will make his future opponent, Lesnar, famous next year.
