French first lady confirms pregnancy rumors

Carla Bruni, first lady of France, recently discussed her current political role and confirmed that she is expecting her second child. The announcement is unlikely to surprise the French public, as multiple photographs of Bruni’s expanding belly have surfaced in the past weeks.

Bruni, who married French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, does not yet know the gender of the child. President Sarkozy has three children from two previous marriages, while Bruni has a son from a previous relationship. This is the pair’s first baby.

In an exclusive interview with the Nice-Matin newspaper, Bruni called her pregnancy a “coming happiness, unexpected and unhoped for.”

The French periodical also reported that Bruni felt at ease with her role in the French government.

"For me, being First Lady of France is not a burden. Three years of this is much less tiring than 10 years of modeling."

The New York Post writes that the baby will likely be born just as President Sarkozy begins to seek re-election.
