French Government Rescinds Outright Support in Polanski Case
The French government moderated their support for the release of Roman Polanski on Wednesday after two French cabinet ministers were heavily criticized for their quick defense of the Polish director. A spokesperson for the French government, Luc Chatel, said in a news conference, "Roman Polanski is neither above nor below the law."
Roman Polanski was detained upon his arrival in Switzerland on Sunday and faces possible extradition to the United States, where he faces sentencing for having unlawful sex with a thirteen-year-old girl.
Even though the French government now treads carefully when it comes to Polanski's case, the "Chinatown" director has many other outspoken supporters. Film industry staples such as Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, David Lynch, Pedro Almodovar and Monica Bellucci have all signed a petition demanding Polanski's release from the Swiss prison where he is currently being held.
