Gay Marriage Legal in California

In a ruling on Thursday, the Supreme Court of California has made gay marriage legal.

The day after the decision in California that made so many gay couples happy, Pope Benedict restated that the Roman Catholic Church still remains in its position that only marriages between man and woman are right under the doctrine.

He was quoted by Reuters as saying that, "The union of love, based on matrimony between a man and a woman, which makes up the family, represents a good for all society that can not be substituted by, confused with, or compared to other types of unions."

In the California Supreme Court on Thursday, the ban on gay marriages was overturned and will allow those of the same sex the right to marry. The church doctrines teach that it is not sinful to be gay, but rather sinful to engage in homosexual acts and they should also not be allowed to adopt children, because, according to the Pope, the family is, "founded on matrimony between a man and a woman, to be the cradle of human life."

The California court apparently found laws that limited marriage to straight couples and these are up against the laws of the state's constitution. Those that are against gay marriage in the United States were said to have vowed to contest the ruling with a statewide ballot measure for a constitutional amendment to ban the marriages of gay couples, reported Reuters.
