George Lucas Makes a Musical!

Luke be a Jedi tonight...

Is George Lucas trying to take on Disney?

Hollywood Reporter blog Heat Vision is reporting that the early stages of pre-production have begun at Skywalker Ranch on a George Lucas-produced animated musical.

Though Lucasfilm has told them that it's too early to reveal too many details, the film will reportedly be computer animated and already has a script, written by David Berenbaum. Berenbaum also wrote the hilarious script for the Will Ferrell vehicle Elf, and also adapted The Spiderwick Chronicles to film.

With Lucas producing, the director's spot will be filled by Kevin Munroe, whose directorial debut was the animated fourth film in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, TMNT.

The plot is unknown, but will somehow incorporate fairies as well as a variety of music "from a variety of sources." So... Shrek crossed with Moulin Rouge? ... That could work. I wanted an adaptation of Mark Hammill's tenure on Guys and Dolls, though. "Do it for Yoda while we serve our guests a soda..."

It will be interesting to see

It will be interesting to see if he can compete with Disney and Pixar at this level. This will be hard to do. Hopefully they come up with something great! I'd love to see another kind of Shrek - what a fun movie for adults and kids!

Shrek...

I liked the first two, but I heard the third wasn't really that great, and the fourth looks quite awful. Lucas is busy putting the finishing touches on his first non-Star Wars directing job since American Graffiti!! Hopefully he can do the Tuskegee Airmen justice with that one... I sincerely hope that this doesn't turn out to be just another Shrek with songs or contemporary anachronisms, actually, though with the music selection they're supposedly going with, that doesn't seem to be in the cards. When Spielberg wanted to make a musical, he indulged himself with the fun Chinese language version of "Anything Goes" in Temple of Doom for a few minutes. Lucas probably has his eyes set on indulging himself in a full length movie that will overstay his welcome, I'm sorry to say. Then again, I'm still just mad about the prequels - and who isn't? He's yet to redeem himself!

Doesn't really tell us much

Doesn't really tell us much at all. I guess we will have to wait to see what this is all about. I would expect it to be something of greatness with Mr. Lucas on board.
