George Strait Wins Big at CMAs
The big winner at Wednesday's Country Music Association Awards in Nashville was George Strait, whom now holds more awards from the association than any other artist - 22 over the span of his career. In addition to both album and single of the year, Strait also won two awards for his production of the works. His wins put him two awards over the previous record-holder, Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn, whom has amassed 20 total awards.
Although he won entertainer of the year - the CMA's highest award - in 1989 and 1990, he failed to capture it this year. That distinction went to Kenny Chesney for his fourth career win in this field and third in a row - bringing him in line with the record Garth Brooks set.
Other big wins this year were Brad Paisley, who was nominated for four awards and took home two, and Carrie Underwood, who won her third straight top female vocalist award. Rascall Flatts, tying the Statler Brothers for consecutive wins in the group category, also took home an award.
The best song award went to Jennifer Nettles for writing "Stay," and Allison Krauss, winning her ninth award - to be shared with Robert Plant, whom won his first - shared the trophy for "Gone, Gone" for best musical event. The best new artist award went to Lady Antebellum.
