Georges St. Pierre Defeats BJ Penn

Georges St. Pierre retains his title in one of the most anticipated fights of all time.

At the UFC 94 pay-per-view event last night at the MGM Grand Hotel, Georges St. Pierre took on BJ Penn in the main event.

St. Pierre's UFC Welterweight Title was on the line, facing the current UFC Lightweight Champion, Penn. Penn is the only man to have held both the UFC Lightweight and Welterweight Championships in the mixed martial arts organization.

Penn had previously defeated Matt Hughes for the UFC Welterweight Title in 2004.

This is Georges St. Pierre's second successful welterweight title defense after becoming the Undisputed UFC Welterweight Champion for the second time at UFC 83 in April 2008, when St. Pierre beat Matt Serra in a rematch.

There was controversy going into this bout over the first BJ Penn vs. Georges St. Pierre battle in 2006. In a bout that would determine the #1 contender for then UFC Welterweight Champion, Matt Hughes, St. Pierre won the bout by split decision. Many felt BJ Penn was the true victor in the fight. Ultimately, St. Pierre was so injured coming off of the fight he had to relinquish his title shot to BJ Penn. Penn went on to face Matt Hughes and lost the bout. Georges St. Pierre would go on to win the UFC Welterweight Title three more times before his highly anticipated rematch with BJ Penn.

St. Pierre dominated BJ Penn for four rounds, and ultimately BJ Penn's corner had to relinquish the match making St. Pierre the winner by technical knockout.

Thiago Alves is now next in line to face St. Pierre for the welterweight title. UFC Lightweight Division fighter, Kenny Florian, is poised to get a shot at BJ Penn's lightweight title.
